There are two separate municipalities for Saugerties:
The Town of Saugerties and the Village of Saugerties.

The Town of Saugerties consists of Asbury, Barclay Heights, Blue Mountain, Centerville, Fish Creek, Glasco, High Woods, Katsbaan, Malden-on-Hudson, Mount Marion, Quarryville, Saxton, Veteran, Village of Saugerties, West Camp, West Saugerties, and portions of Zena.

Saugerties is a 68-square mile plethora of activity, historic interest, and architectural beauty, and is Ulster County's most populous township.

Some of the most popular attractions include the Saugerties Lighthouse, Opus 40, and the historic downtown's vibrant antique district. The waterfronts, antiques, and fabulous restaurants and bistros make this a tourist’s and resident’s delight. Shoppers enjoy the village's downtown shopping district, an 8-block area that was the nation’s first nationally registered historic business district. Saugerties was also the host of the Woodstock '94 concert.

On April 27, 1677, the land which is now Saugerties was purchased from the Esopus Indians for the price of a blanket, piece of cloth, shirt, loaf of bread and some coarse fiber. The first business interests in Saugerties were river landings and toll roads, to which mills were added in the 1700's. Incorporated in 1831 under the name of Ulster, the name was changed to Saugerties in 1855.

As late as 1811 the hamlet of Saugerties contained only twenty-one houses. Then in the 1820's Henry Barclay sparked the expansion of the community by establishing the Ulster Iron Works and a paper mill. This drove the population to about 4,000 in 1870, where it remained almost unchanged for one hundred years.

Today, relics of other early industries, such as ice harvesting, bluestone quarries, and steamboating still endure.
